Christians and Flower Essences: Fear of the Unknown
One thing Christian culture tends to do horribly well is being afraid of the unknown. It seems that anything natural health or quantum physics that doesn’t make sense to your average evangelical often gets labeled New Age, without any real understanding of what that term means.
While I have not really heard any objections to flower essences, I know that the unfamiliar can raise concerns and I want to help you understand instead of fear.
Scripture tells us that we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
So while we do want to be diligent in our research and understanding of alternative health topics (making the unknown known), we don’t need to be afraid of anything.
It is so sad to think how many good things that God made for our benefit we are missing out on because we are afraid of the unknown.
How I learned about Flower Essences
I had never heard about flower essences until I met Seneca, my friend and fellow Splankna practitioner. Seneca started making flower essences playfully as a child and discovered in her early 20s that there actually is a lot of healing power in the essences she had been making.
After learning about other companies that make and sell flower essences, Seneca studied more about essence making and began selling her own blends. She sent me some samples to try and after seeing the effects on myself and my dog I was hooked!
One of her flower essence blends called Align helps support chiropractic adjustments. I had been having trouble with my neck and had been seeing my chiropractor at least once a week to get it adjusted.
I tried the Align essence blend and almost immediately felt like my neck was relaxed and not fighting the adjustment. Since starting the flower essence my adjustments have stuck better and my chiropractor is pleased with how well it is holding adjustments between visits.
Flower essences can also help animals, and are especially helpful with rescued pets. My German Shepherd is a rescue and has always had high levels of anxiety with lots of barking.
I started putting the Peace for Pets flower essence blend in his water bowl and his demeanor has noticeably changed.
He still barks occasionally but is much calmer and less fearful. He used to refuse to be comforted when he was freaked out and now will let us pet him and soothe him when he gets scared.
Incantations, chants, or prayers?
The one specific Christian concern Seneca has heard about flower essences is that incantations or chants are often spoken over flower essences as they are made (apparently this is common with essential oils too).
One option to dealing with this concern is to just not worry about it and trust that the Spirit that inside of us is stronger than the spirit of this world (1 John 4:4). Those incantations only have the power we choose to give them.
Another option is to order Freedom Flowers, Seneca’s flower essences. Instead of chanting over the essences as she makes them, Seneca prays over them and invites the Holy Spirit into her process.
What is a Flower Essence?
Flower essences are water infusions that have taken the frequency of specific flowers. They are a gentle approach to addressing emotional issues in people and pets.
At the quantum level everything is moving, buzzing. That buzzing can also be described as frequencies. Everything in creation has a frequency, even our emotions.
One of the interesting things about frequencies is that higher frequencies displace lower frequencies. This can be seen with tuning forks, when you strike both forks they sound different at first but over time they begin to have the same tone.
Fortunately, positive emotions, things like love, joy, peace, vibrate at higher frequencies than negative emotions such as fear, anger, stress.
Scripture tells us that love casts out fear (1 John 4:18), and with frequencies it is literally true. Love is a higher frequency than fear and replaces that lower frequency when ever they come in contact.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was vibrating over the waters.” Genesis 1:2
In Genesis we see the Spirit of God hovering, vibrating, over the water that covered the Earth. While we don’t know exactly what was happening then, it could be said that He was tuning the frequency of the waters to His higher frequency, bringing order to the chaos. (Read more on this)
Water is a perfect carrier that easily takes on frequencies. When you add a few drops of the flower essence to a glass of water it shifts the frequency in the entire glass. Then when you drink that water, the 70% of your body that is water begins to align with that frequency as well.
The lower frequencies from negative emotions, electronic pollution, and disease all begin to give way to the higher frequencies from the flower essence. This encourages higher frequency emotions to take over and set the tone.
Different than Essential Oils
One of the common questions about flower essences is if they are like essential oils. While both come from plants, flower essences only use the flowers while essential oils are made from the aromatic parts of plants which may not be the flowers.
Another major difference is that essential oils work with the biochemical systems of the body and therefore can conflict with other medications; flower essences work with the energetic frequencies of the body and do not interfere with medications. (Read more about the differences here)
What to expect when taking a flower essence
Flower essences like other methods of energy healing are very subtle. You may notice immediate changes, but most likely you won’t feel any change right away. Often it will be a friend or family member that will notice the emotional shift in you before you notice yourself.
It is recommended to take an essence consistently for about a month before evaluating if it is helping. The good news is that taking the “wrong” flower essence won’t hurt you, it just won’t help the issue you were hoping to fix.
Flower essence blends are a great way to see results faster because even if one flower in the blend isn’t working for your issue others in the blend will most likely work.
Though not common, it is possible to end up having an emotional detox of sorts when taking a flower essence, sometimes called a healing crisis.
Much like you can experience negative physical effects from a physical detox as all the junk leaves the body, some people do experience some moodiness, bad dreams, crying, etc. as the flower essence helps clear out the junk emotions.
This isn’t something to be afraid of, but just something to be aware of so you won’t be caught off guard.

Redemptive Postures Series
This post is the third in a monthly series. The heart of redemptive postures is that God created everything and said it was good. Redemptive postures looks at various health and wellness topics that Christians have concerns about and seeks to find what if any of those topics can be brought back to the good God originally intended for them.
